November Encounters Fantastic Beasts, Cat Named Bob and Bad Santa


On the brink of upcoming weekend here's our list of November news for three groups of movie lovers: comedy, horror and family. Though horror movie fans might be a bit disappointed with just one new release, entertaining comedies, including another Bad Santa, and a premier of J.K.Rowling debut as a screenwriter in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them must be a real teaser for those who view film industry as the means of simply having fun.

COMEDY

Director: Larry Charles Written by: Rajiv Joseph, Scott Rothman Starring: Nicolas Cage, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Rainn Wilson, Russell Brand, Ken Marino, Denis Ohare, Paul Scheer Plot Synopsis: Gary Faulkner (Nicolas Cage) is an ex-con, unemployed handyman, and modern day Don Quixote who receives a vision from God (Russell Brand) telling him to capture Osama Bin Laden. Armed with only a single sword purchased from a home-shopping network, Gary travels to Pakistan to complete his mission. While on his quest, Gary encounters old friends back home in Colorado, the new friends he makes in Pakistan, the enemies he makes at the CIA – and even God and Osama themselves. A hilarious tale of patriotism and one man’s quest for justice.

Director: David E. Talbert Written by: David E. Talbert Starring: Kimberly Elise, Omar Epps, Danny Glover, Romany Malco, Monique, Nicole Ari Parker, J.B. Smoove, Gabrielle Union, Jessie Usher, DC Young Fly Plot Synopsis: The film tells the festive story of a beloved patriarch who asks his family for one gift this holiday season: to get along. If they can honor that wish and spend five days under the same roof without killing one another, it will be a Christmas miracle.

Director: Roger Spottiswoode Written by: Tim John, Maria Nation, James Bowen, Gary Jenkins Starring: Luke Treadaway, Ruta Gedmintas, Joanne Froggatt, Anthony Head Plot Synopsis: When James Bowen (portrayed by Luke Treadaway) found an injured, ginger street cat curled up in the hallway of his homeless shelter, he had no idea just how much his life was about to change. James was living hand-to-mouth on the streets of London and the last thing he needed was a pet.

Director: Mark Waters Written by: Shauna Cross, Doug Ellin, John Phillips, Johnny Rosenthal Starring: Billy Bob Thornton, Kathy Bates, Christina Hendricks, Tony Cox, Brett Kelly Plot Synopsis: Bad Santa 2, the sequel to the 2003 comedy movie Bad Santa. An adventure with Santa impersonator Willie Stokes.

Director: Warren Beatty Written by: Warren Beatty, Bo Goldman Starring: Lily Collins, Alden Ehrenreich, Warren Beatty, Alec Baldwin, Annette Bening, Haley Bennett, Candice Bergen, Matthew Broderick, Dabney Coleman, Steve Coogan, Taissa Farmiga, Ed Harris, Megan Hilty, Oliver Platt, Martin Sheen Plot Synopsis: An aspiring young actress (Lily Collins) and her ambitious young driver (Alden Ehrenreich) struggle hopefully with the absurd eccentricities of the wildly unpredictable billionaire (Warren Beatty), who they work for. It’s Hollywood, 1958. Small town beauty queen and devout Baptist virgin Marla Mabrey (Collins), under contract to the infamous Howard Hughes (Beatty), arrives in Los Angeles. At the airport, she meets her driver Frank Forbes (Ehrenreich), who is engaged to be married to his 7th grade sweetheart and is a deeply religious Methodist. Their instant attraction not only puts their religious convictions to the test, but also defies Hughes’ #1 rule: no employee is allowed to have any relationship whatsoever with a contract actress. Hughes’ behavior intersects with Marla and Frank in very separate and unexpected ways, and as they are drawn deeper into his bizarre world, their values are challenged and their lives are changed.

HORROR

Director: Simon Verhoeven Written by: Simon Verhoeven, Matthew Ballen, Philip Koch Starring: Alycia Debnam-Carey, William Moseley, Brit Morgan, Connor Paolo, Liesl Ahlers Plot Synopsis: One simple Facebook decision has deadly consequences in this chilling social media horror. Laura (Debnam-Carey) is one of the most popular girls in her high school, seemingly adored by all. She is then sent a Facebook friend request by lonely Marina (Liesl Ahlers). Having initially accepted, Laura finds herself being obsessively pursued by Marina and not long afterwards hits the “unfriend” button. When Marina apparently commits suicide in an online video, Laura's life takes a turn for the terrifying, and she becomes the victim of a supernatural presence, attacked in her own home by a mysterious force. Is Marina responsible? And why does she refuse to disappear from Laura's friend list, even as it increasingly diminishes in number? Striking right to the heart of the social media generation, this topical and spooky horror is bound to have everyone thinking twice before unfriending that certain someone.

FAMILY

Director: David Yates Written by: J.K. Rowling Starring: Eddie Redmayne, Colin Farrell, Ezra Miller, Samantha Morton, Katherine Waterston, Christine Marzano, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol Plot Synopsis: The film opens in 1926 as Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) has just completed a global excursion to find and document an extraordinary array of magical creatures. Arriving in New York for a brief stopover, he might have come and gone without incident...were it not for a No-Maj (American for Muggle) named Jacob, a misplaced magical case, and the escape of some of Newt’s fantastic beasts, which could spell trouble for both the wizarding and No-Maj worlds.

Director: Mike Mitchell Written by: Erica Rivinoja Starring: Anna Kendrick, Justin Timberlake Plot Synopsis: How the Trolls came into their vibrant and colorful hair. DreamWorks Animation’s Trolls is an irreverent comedy extravaganza with incredible music! From the genius creators of Shrek, Trolls stars Anna Kendrick as Poppy, the optimistic leader of the Trolls, and her polar opposite, Branch, played by Justin Timberlake. Together, this unlikely pair of Trolls must embark on an adventure that takes them far beyond the only world they’ve ever known.

Director: Ron Clements, John Musker Written by: Ron Clements, Taika Waititi Starring: Naomi Sequeira, Dwayne Johnson Plot Synopsis: Three thousand years ago, the greatest sailors in the world voyaged across the vast Pacific, discovering the many islands of Oceania.
