January Is Typically A Month Of Drama
With Golden Globe behind the bend and Oscars 2018 approaching, more serious film production attracts the major audience. There's no secret that more drama movies than thrillers end up in the nominee lists and, of course, they start circulating around raising curiosity and a wish to watch the now famous movie. Especially when you hear your friends or colleagues at work discussing the plot, the characters, the implied ideas or simply a cool soundtrack.
However, these are the dramas from the last year meanwhile the life and film production goes on offering new January titles. Nine January born dramas await you at cinema theatres. Take a look at them - they might be no less brilliant than the current nominees or winners.
Plot Synopsis: It's the start of a new year at a small suburban high school. Abigail (Quinn Shephard) is an outcast who seeks solace in the worlds of the characters she reads about, much to the amusement of her manipulative classmate, Melissa (Nadia Alexander). When an intriguing new drama teacher (Chris Messina) casts Abigail over Melissa in Arthur Miller's The Crucible, Abigail's confidence blooms, and soon her relationship with Jeremy begins to move beyond just fantasy. Melissa, fueled by vengeful jealousy, begins to spiral out of control and concocts a plot against Abigail. This triggers a chain of events that will come to affect everyone around them, as well as reveal some dark truths.
Plot Synopsis: Billy Bloom (Alex Lawther) is one-of-a-kind: a fabulous, glitter-bedecked, gender-bending teenager whose razor-sharp wit is matched only his by his outrageous, anything-goes fashion sense. Plot Synopsis: The Bronx, New York City. 14-year-old Ulysses has just lost his father. His mother Amara is left to raise her two young children with the only help of their strict and conservative aunt Rose. Ulysses is now expected to be the man of the house and shoulder his responsibilities. But the shy and effeminate Ulysses has another challenge to confront: he is not comfortable in his own skin. As his family pretends he is just going through a phase, Ulysses is also being bullied at school for his introversion and sensitivity. He finds an escape by creating a world of fantasy for himself, filled with glimpses of beauty, dance and music. Ulysses' life changes when he comes into contact with a vibrant community of transgender and other LGBT youth at a Saturday Church program, where he realizes that he is not alone. He quickly has to take on a double life: satisfying his family's desire to have him part of their religious community while digging deeper into his true identity. But his aunt is growing more and more suspicious, and the young man will soon be forced to reveal the truth about himself.
Plot Synopsis: 1970s Australia: A 200-ton blue whale washes up on a local beach and the kids think it's the biggest thing that's ever happened in their lives. Behind closed doors, the Mums and Dads of this quiet suburban cul-de-sac celebrate in their own special way, by joining the sexual revolution. It's a time of boxed wine, bad hair, bad styles, bad choices, but good times. And like the rotting whale, it's all about to go spectacularly wrong.
Plot Synopsis: On September 11, 2001, the world watched in terror. On September 12, 2001, they volunteered to fight. Set in the harrowing days following 9/11, a U.S. Special Forces team, led by their new Captain, Mitch Nelson (Chris Hemsworth), is chosen to be the first U.S. troops sent into Afghanistan for an extremely dangerous mission. There, in the rugged mountains, they must convince Northern Alliance General Dostum (Navid Negahban) to join forces with them to fight their common adversary: the Taliban and their Al Qaeda allies. Plot Synopsis: When their plane from Los Angeles to New York is grounded on the morning of September 11, 2001, strangers Elliott (Joe Purdy) and Joni (Amber Rubarth) are unexpectedly thrust together amidst the chaos of that historic day. With little in common but both needing to get to NYC urgently, they accept help from Joni's family friend Scottie (Krisha Fairchild) who lends the duo a rusty old 1972 Chevy Van. The shock and stress of 9/11 quickly threatens to derail their cross country journey until the pair discover what they do have in common: a love for old folk songs. Armed with a pile of guitars left in the van from Scottie's touring days, Elliott and Joni raise their voices together (and with those they meet on the road), re-discovering the healing nature of music and bearing witness to a nation of people who, even while mourning, manage to lift each other up in the wake of tragedy.
