For Two Weeks All Film Roads Will Lead To Berlin


German bears are back in the city! Today they celebrate the opening of the 69th Berlin International Film Festival - the Berlinale. Within the scope of this one of the most important film festivals, the Competition section will present 17 entries vying for the Golden Bear and Silver Bears.

Besides actress Juliette Binoche (France), the Jury President, this year’s International Jury includes film critic and author Justin Chang (USA), actress Sandra Hüller (Germany), director Sebastián Lelio (Chile), curator Rajendra Roy (USA), and producer, director and actress Trudie Styler (United Kingdom).

The following 17 films will enter the Competition:

  • Der Boden unter den Füßen (The Ground Beneath My Feet) by Marie Kreutzer (Austria)

  • Di jiu tian chang (So Long, My Son) by Wang Xiaoshuai (People’s Republic of China)

  • Elisa y Marcela (Elisa & Marcela) by Isabel Coixet (Spain)

  • Der Goldene Handschuh (The Golden Glove) by Fatih Akin (Germany / France)

  • Gospod postoi, imeto i' e Petrunija (God Exists, Her Name is Petrunya) by Teona Strugar Mitevska (Macedonia / Belgium / Slovenia / Croatia / France)

  • Grâce à Dieu (By the Grace of God) by François Ozon (France)

  • Ich war zuhause, aber (I Was at Home, But) by Angela Schanelec (Germany / Serbia)

  • Kız Kardeşler (A Tale of Three Sisters) by Emin Alper (Turkey / Germany / Netherlands / Greece)

  • Mr. Jones by Agnieszka Holland (Poland / United Kingdom / Ukraine)

  • Öndög by Wang Quan'an (Mongolia)

  • La paranza dei bambini (Piranhas) by Claudio Giovannesi (Italy)

  • Répertoire des villes disparues (Ghost Town Anthology) by Denis Côté (Canada)

  • Synonymes (Synonyms) by Nadav Lapid (France / Israel / Germany)

  • Systemsprenger (System Crasher) by Nora Fingscheidt (Germany)

  • Ut og stjæle hester (Out Stealing Horses) by Hans Petter Moland (Norway / Sweden / Denmark)

  • Yi miao zhong (One Second) by Zhang Yimou (People’s Republic of China)

  • The Kindness of Strangers by Lone Scherfig (Denmark / Canada / Sweden / Germany / France) - Opening film

This year the Berlinale is noted for the biggest number of female directors participating in the festival. 7 out of 17 films of the Competition were realized by female filmmakers.

The winners of the Golden Bear for the Best Film and the Silver Bears will be announced at the Closing Gala on Saturday, February 16.
