Today the world heard the nominations for the 98th Academy Awards. This year marks a celebration of diversity and genre range - from vampire epics to thoughtful literary adaptations.
Ryan Coogler’s Sinners broke the record leading all films with 16 nominations. Its strength lies not only in technical categories, but also in acting recognition, where Michael B. Jordan anchors the film’s presence with a Best Actor nomination. Close behind, One Battle After Another emerges as a formidable challenger, earning 13 nominations, including a Best Actor nod for Leonardo DiCaprio, Best Picture, Best Director and multiple supporting acting mentions.
A tightly clustered group follows, with Frankenstein, Marty Supreme, and Sentimental Value each securing 9 nominations, reflecting strong all-around recognition for their creative and technical achievements. Not far behind, Hamnet collects 8 nominations, underscoring its steady presence across key categories.
In the Best Actress race, the nominations spotlight a range of emotional registers: Jessie Buckley (Hamnet) and Renate Reinsve (Sentimental Value) represent restrained, character-focused storytelling, while Emma Stone (Bugonia) and Kate Hudson (Song Sung Blue) bring more stylized, outward performances into the mix. On the actor side, familiar names like Timothée Chalamet (Marty Supreme) and Ethan Hawke (Blue Moon) share space with Wagner Moura, whose nomination for The Secret Agent shows the Academy’s continued openness to international-led performances.
This year’s Best Picture nominees form a richly varied snapshot of contemporary cinema: F1 delivers high-octane spectacle built for the biggest screen, while Sinners and One Battle After Another embrace intensity and consequence through bold, morally charged storytelling; quieter but no less powerful, Hamnet and Sentimental Value find depth in grief, memory, and emotional restraint, as Marty Supreme blends confidence and vulnerability through a performance-driven lens, Frankenstein reimagines a timeless myth with modern urgency, Bugonia stands out for its eccentric tone and daring vision, The Secret Agent brings political tension from an international perspective, and Train Dreams closes the lineup with a reflective meditation on time, labor, and legacy.
