The Winners For The 2024 Edgar Allan Poe Awards Announced

On May 1 when most of us took a day off, the 78th Annual Edgar® Awards, honoring the best in mystery fiction, nonfiction, and television published or produced in 2023, were celebrated in New York.

James Lee Burke's Flags On The Bayou was announced the Best Novel. It's a novel set in Civil War-era Louisiana as the South transforms and a brilliant cast of characters - enslaved and free women, plantation gentry, and battle-weary Confederate and Union soldiers - are caught in the maelstrom.

Best Paperback Original award went to Vera Wong’s Unsolicited Advice for Murderers by Jesse Q. Sutanto. A lonely shopkeeper takes it upon herself to solve a murder in the most peculiar way in this captivating mystery by the author of already bestselling novel Dial A for Aunties.

The Peacock and the Sparrow by I.S. Berry received the Edgar® as the Best First Novel by an American Author. A former CIA Operations Officer's debut book, of course, is an authentic spy story plotted around the time of the Arab Spring.

Last year Notes on an Execution by Danya Kukafka was announced the winner for the 2023 Best Novel Edgar® Award.
