Will The Power Of The Dog Bring The First Best Picture Oscar To Netflix?
Just a couple of hours ago Tracey Ellis Ross and Leslie Jordan have announced the Oscar nominees for the 94th Academy Awards. Jane Campion's The Power of the Dog has dominated with even 12 nods, followed by Dune, which received 10 nominations, however, except one of the most important for the best directing. Belfast and West Side Story both got seven nominations each.
Jane Campion was honoured in two directing categories - best directing and best adapted screenplay, whereas Steven Spielberg earned his eighth nod through different areas and genres of his filmmaking. Another Asian director in a row - Japanese Ryusuke Hamaguchi - also was nominated for best directing for his three-hour long examination of grief and art in Drive My Car, as his movie got the nod not only as the best international feature film but the overall best picture as well.
Best actor/actress in a leading or supporting role have also demonstrated a certain phenomenon when the actually married couples were simultaneously nominated for awards in the same category: Penelope Cruz (Parallel Mothers) and Javier Bardem (Being the Ricardos) for a leading role as well as Kirsten Dunst and Jess Plemons (both The Power of the Dog) for a supporting role.
