A Little Bit Of Everything For Movie-Loving Christmas

December 23, 2018

Full-stop. Everything we'd like now is just fall into comfy cushions and watch a movie, which is not too deep and not too tense. Or better make a movie day and engage continuously into cinematographic paradise. To avoid monotony, we'd mix genres and have a mishmash of animation, comedy, science fiction and even horror. And why not when December brings new intriguing features to big screens:

COMEDY

DUMPLIN

Plot Synopsis: The film follows an outspoken plus-sized teenage girl named Willowdean (Danielle Macdonald), who's known as Will to her friends and Dumplin' to her mother (Jennifer Aniston), a former beauty queen who now runs the local Miss Teen Blue Bonnet pageant. In her small Texas town, Will confidently ignores comments about her weight and listens to Dolly Parton songs obsessively. But when she decides to enter her mother's pageant in protest, her bold move encourages other contestants to follow in her footsteps, redefining the town's traditions in the process.

MARY POPPINS RETURNS

Plot Synopsis: In the story, Michael (Ben Whishaw) and Jane (Emily Mortimer) are now grown up, with Michael, his three children and their housekeeper, Ellen (Julie Walters), living on Cherry Tree Lane. After Michael suffers a personal loss, the enigmatic nanny Mary Poppins (Emily Blunt) re-enters the lives of the Banks family, and, along with the optimistic street lamplighter Jack (Lin-Manuel Miranda), uses her unique magical skills to help the family rediscover the joy and wonder missing in their lives.

HOLMES & WATSON

Plot Synopsis: The Step Brothers are reunited - this time playing the world's greatest consulting detective and his loyal biographer - as Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly star as Holmes & Watson.

HORROR

THE HOUSE THAT JACK BUILT

Plot Synopsis: USA in the 1970s. We follow the highly intelligent Jack (Matt Dillon) over a span of 12 years and are introduced to the murders that define Jack's development as a serial killer. We experience the story from Jack's point of view, while he postulates each murder is an artwork in itself. As the inevitable police intervention is drawing nearer, he is taking greater and greater risks in his attempt to create the ultimate artwork. Along the way we experience Jack's descriptions of his personal condition, problems and thoughts through a recurring conversation with the unknown Verge - a grotesque mixture of sophistry mixed with an almost childlike self-pity and psychopathic explanations.

THE SUNDAY NIGHT SLAUGHTER

Plot Synopsis: Terror unfolds in a quiet suburban town after the most destructive demon in the galaxy is accidentally unleashed, setting in motion a butterfly effect series of events that affects the citizens in mysterious and horrific ways. Corey Feldman plays James Diamond, an eccentric television host who exposes sexual predators, who must now face the biggest challenge of his career when a predator turns out to be not what they seem.

SCIENCE-FICTION AND ADVENTURE

BEYOND WHITE SPACE

Plot Synopsis: When a deep space fishing vessel is robbed by a gang of pirates, the Captain makes a daring decision to go after a rare and nearly extinct species. On the hunt, his obsession propels them further into space and danger as the crew spins into a downward spiral of mutiny and betrayal.

MORTAL ENGINES

Plot Synopsis: Thousands of years after civilization was destroyed by a cataclysmic event, humankind has adapted and a new way of living has evolved. Gigantic moving cities now roam the Earth, ruthlessly preying upon smaller traction towns. Tom Natsworthy (Robert Sheehan) - who hails from a Lower Tier of the great traction city of London - finds himself fighting for his own survival after he encounters the dangerous fugitive Hester Shaw (Hera Hilmar). Two opposites, whose paths should never have crossed, forge an unlikely alliance that is destined to change the course of the future.
